Prayer for the quake

God, send the quake

the kind that shakes us

out of dullness and illusion

the quake that jolts us

from complacency and comfort

never to be the same

God, send the quake

the kind that rattles the rooms

as Your Spirit blows wind and fire

leaving us shaken and stirred

ready to be poured out

for a broken world

God, send the quake

the kind that swallows those

bent on resisting You to the end

releasing us all from Korah-plague

of divisive, violent ways

refocused to create better days

God, don’t send the quake

that flattens cities and crushes rich and poor alike

we’ve done too much crushing ourselves

grinding the poor, locking them out

exposing them to the elements. forgive us

have mercy on them

Don’t send the quake

that snuffs away our children’s futures

only a quake that clears away

the clutter we have constructed

opening their view to what You desire

so that they can shape the future You dream

May we ourselves be that kind of quake

quivering with holy fear, sifted and ready

today and for the rest of our days
